If you've just picked up a drone — including ours — there's a legal step to take before your first flight. As of 1 January 2026, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) updated its registration thresholds, so it's worth checking the current rules rather than relying on older advice.

Do you need to register?

Anything from 100g to under 250g with a camera needs both a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. Anything from 250g up to 25kg needs both a Flyer ID and an Operator ID, regardless of whether it has a camera. Drones under 100g don't legally require either, though the CAA recommends getting a Flyer ID anyway. caacaa

What's the difference between the two?
